HUSTLE
Why I Embrace Side Hustles as a Photographer
Photography isn’t just my job—it’s how I experience the world. Every frame tells a story, every detail a mystery to uncover. But in the world of commercial photography, creativity can sometimes feel boxed in. That’s why I’ve carved out space for side hustles: to break free, recharge, and reconnect with the joy of seeing the world differently.
Escaping the Routine
Commercial photography thrives on precision. It’s about delivering exactly what’s expected, and while that discipline is essential, it can also become repetitive. My side projects offer an escape from that rhythm—a chance to pick up my camera with no agenda other than curiosity. Whether it’s capturing the way light fractures through a rain-streaked window or finding humor in an oddly placed street sign, these moments remind me why I fell in love with photography in the first place.
Seeing the Invisible
My photography brain never shuts off. It’s always hunting for the overlooked and the unconventional. A crumpled soda can gleaming in the sun becomes a miniature sculpture. Through my side hustles, I dive into these details, creating work that’s personal, unexpected, and entirely my own.
Finding Humour Everywhere
The world is full of unintentional comedy, and my side projects let me capture it. A crooked mannequin in a shop window, a pigeon perched like royalty on a broken lamppost—these moments are everywhere if you’re willing to look. They add levity to my work and keep my perspective fresh.
Fueling Creativity for the Bigger Picture
What often starts as a side hustle evolve into full blown self obsessed photography projects. Experimenting with abstract compositions or offbeat humour makes me a better storyteller, and I bring that energy back into my professional work.
Photography isn’t just a career for me; it’s a way of thinking, of being. Side hustles allow me to push boundaries, challenge my perspective, and stay passionate about the craft.
So please join me on my journey - one that has been my life for over 35 years (and counting). Most of the images here have never been seen before by anyone except me, my camera, my trusty Mac computer and Mildred (my cat) on the odd occasion she wakes up!
